Most of the calcium in plants acts as a pectin structural component of the cell wall. Calcium pectate formed with pectic acid is fixed between two adjacent cell walls, ie, the middle layer, maintaining the structure and function of the cell wall.

 

In the absence of calcium, the adhesion of calcium to pectin in the middle layer is affected, and plant tissues are susceptible to pathogens. Therefore, calcium can enhance the disease resistance of plants, making crops resistant to storage, transport and not rot.
